My band send a demo in for The Ripley fest, never got an answer, so i sent them a few messages on myspace and got told they'd had something like 400 or 600 demos sent in? I wasn't holding my breath for the phone to call about this gig!

Perhaps this Jam night might then be a good way to get noticed, instead of joining the mass pile of demos?

i played there last night with the band..
the guy on keys has been a few times before..
we went down a storm.. we ended up playing more songs than we'd been booked for, sounded great, great feedback from audience members and also got 2 free drinks!..
the guy who owns the place (phil i believe..) also asked if we could do a 90 mins set around september time.. with the option of getting paid around 100 quid for our troubles!
really friendly place! definately recomended..
it seems they would prefer covers bands... as theres nothing more enjoyable to people who've been drinking than to sing along to songs they've heard before!

i think most gigs are got like that, (someone who knows someone), that seems to be the way music works. i doubt if our demo was ever listened too.

i do think going to the jam night would really help...
i dig ur stuff, listened to it many times on ur myspace.. its live and tight... its not like uve done it in a studio and played every part till its perfect...
the sound man, mick... he seemed really nice, emailed him thanking him for his good work.. seemed to really know what he was doing..
its quite strange though, we've played out 3 times now...
1st time was to 200 people at 'later... without jules holland' a gig in a sports hall in long eaton...
then the kestrel... then the morning after at denby pottery...
so we've not giged pubs and stuff like a 'normal' band... and our 4th gig is gunna be crossley park!
dont get me wrong, were all pretty good on our instruments, and all have giging experiance.. myself from rock bands, the drummer and bass player from brass bands and keys from doing solo work..
but we're doing covers too.. and thats what people like at gigs at places like the denby pottery...
i think tailoring your set to suit the audience is perhaps needed?...
some places want covers, some places hate them.. its a case of finding the right mix at the right time i recon!

yep you're dead right, if my band really wanted to play alot of gigs, we'd learn a cover set. it's a shame that people don't open their minds and give new music a go but many venues want a band that can rattle through a few different era's of music so everyone one knows some of the stuff. I personally just don't like playing covers, but that doesn't mean i'm offended by venues that want that. horses for courses.

yeah.. dont get me wrong.. i dont mind playing it.. but i feel like im selling out a little by doing it...
playing guitar, i dont mind, cos i play like me.. and i improvise solos and stuff..
but singing other ppl's lyrics, trying to give them meaning is a bit of a lie.. thats if you believe music should be personal expression...

i'd never accuse a band of selling out for playing covers, i think some bands do really well when they re interprate old songs, particularly when they change the songs original genre. i also think any band who'd accuse others of selling out take themselves far too seriously, and come across as idiots. I think you'll have a great gig up there

yeah.. to be honest! not a fan of pretencious, know it alls!..
our bass players been on to me today, apparently a battle of the bands is happening soon at the devonshire?! (i've no idea where it is, or when!)
so we'll need to get writing.. got a few ideas kicking around, but we've no stand out lyracist in the band.. so its something that'll need working on i feel!.. need to get a move on!

I suspect he means The Devonshire Arms - Pentrich Lane, Buckland Hollow, Pentrich, Derbyshire, DE5 3RH www.thedevarms.com Didn't realise that this place was still doing live music... I feel a new thread coming on.
